Abstract: [Summary] Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) replacements have been rapidly developed for nearly 50 years. Development of alloplastic materials has largely promoted and led the development of temporomandibular joint prosthesis. Historically developing materials for TMJ prosthesis included gold foil, stainless steel, cobalt-chromium alloy, titanium alloy, polythene, ultra-high molecular weight polythene and, etc. This article aimed to review the improvement of alloplastic materials and analyze their advantages and disadvantages.
